Grand Teton – Amphitheater Lake Trail
Hike this trail to get a closer look of Grand Teton range and enjoy the peaceful nature at Amphitheater Lake and Surprise Lake.
Description
Amphitheater Lake Trail starts at the Lupine Meadows Parking lot and switchbacks up the mountain through dense forest. The trail is easy to navigate and offers nice views of the plains and lakes of Grand Teton National Park. After 8 kilometers you will first reach Surprise Lake and then Amphitheater Lake, which is located 500 meter further up. Both lakes are a good spot for a break.
What to bring
- Bike and Hike essentials
- Bear spray
Tips
- Consider that you will climb up to 3000m in altitude. At such elevations, altitude sickness may already be an issue. If you feel sick, do not continue the hike and descent to lower elevations.
- Don’t be discouraged by the name of ‘Disappointment Peak’. It is the main peak visible from Amphitheater Lake and, to the eye, is no disappointment at all. The name originates from a group climbers that, in 1925, were not able to climb the second peak of the mountain.
